For years the Big Wheel kids ride on toy was known as the king of the sidewalk. The Big Wheel was developed by Louis Marx Toys and released in 1969. It was immediately a great success. In 1972 Carolina Enterprises release their version of a kids ride on toy called the Hot Cycle. By the late seventies the two companies joined and formed Empire Industries. By than Big Wheel was practically a house hold word.
Every garage that had kids ride on toys usually had at least one Big Wheel. The ride on toys would give the kids’ hours of entertainment racing up and down the sidewalk. I remember anytime a car would drive by pedaling as fast as you could to beat the car to the corner. Or better yet how many remember going as fast as you could and turning the handles really sharp to see how many times you could get it to spin in a circle, better known as doing a doughnut. There are even sites online where you can buy replacement parts. I just figured by the time you wore a hole in the front tire from using it as a break you should just throw it away. I was very happy when I found out you could buy a new front tire.
